The past week has been a week of blessings.

Last Saturday, I went with Shelly, Diane & Brenda to the DOK of Upper SC. Fall Assembly at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Columbia. It was a wonderful day of bonding with fellow daughters.

Sunday was Holy Cross Day. It is really special at Holy Cross Episcopal Church. Our bishop comes and we have the confirmations on that day and a picnic following the services.

I received a gift of art from my young friend Jonathan. That was enough to make the day blessed. The service was awesome and the picnic was wonderful.

I got home and loaded my camera card into my computer to review the day's pictures. Lo and behold, I found a picture that had, either the coolest light reflection ever or we had a special visitor that day. Many people believe it was an angel. The Spirit of God was certainly present that day.

Another blessing is I received the free artwork I won from the Green Dragon Empire - Labor Day Contest. I am such a fan of Linda Biggs' Art and to receive 2 prints, an art book and a greeting card brought me much joy.

Tuesday Evening, we had our monthly meeting for the St. Clare Chapter of the DOK. Our Diocese president, Anida Mims, came down to speak to us. Father Mike installed Shelly as our President and Rachel Michelle as the Directress over the Jr. DOK. The Jr. DOK put on a mini play on "The Power of Prayer". That really was a blessing. We saw a film about the DOK and Anida talked to us. Such a wonderful evening.

Thursday was pretty special too. It was my 20th wedding anniversary. I can't tell you how blessed having Ric in my life. His family became my family and I love them all so much! I miss my father-in-law Tom (Gramps) so very much!

When I left home 20 years ago to move to another state with my new husband, my mother cried because she would miss seeing me everyday, but she was so glad I had Richard in my life. She loved him so much.

The last time we saw her at the nursing home before she passed, Ric was holding her hand. She looked at him and said, "Take care of Cathy". Ric answered back "We'll take care of each other."

This just seemed like a good time to reflect on my blessings...not just the blessings of this past week, but overall. God blessed me with a wonderful Mother to guide me. Then, I left to go with a wonderful husband to walk side by side with.

I was blessed with a joyful, so full of sunshine best friend Patricia until cancer took her in 1996. She continues to bless me in my memories and what I learned from her.

I have been blessed with wonderful friends and mentors during different turns of life.

A very special blessing occurred in 2007 when we started attending Holy Cross. Ever since we moved into our little house a couple of blocks away, I would feel a pull when I passed by. Once, I went by for a flu shot and all the people I ran into was so nice. I saw the presence of the church locally with the Pumpkin Patch and the Medieval Fair. I liked how the church was active in the community.

Then one day, one of Ric's friends that he used to work with said "Come over and see our new grandbaby." So we went to visit Danny & Ann and met Christopher. We were sitting talking and Danny mentioned that they were going to Holy Cross and talked about how awesome it was. I was more intrigued.

Well, we had been church-less for quite a while and you do miss the community and support. After my Mom fell and went in the Nursing home, I was feeling overwhelmed. I needed someone to pray for me. I took off and I went to Holy Cross. I asked the secretary if there was anyone to pray for me. She introduced me to Father Mike. Later that evening, I said to Ric "I don't know what you are doing this Sunday, but I am going to church!"

He was willing to give it a try too. He grew up in an Episcopal church--Christ Church in downtown Greenville. Well, we went that Sunday and for both of us it was like going home.

My Mom was pleased that we had found a church family and I think that gave her peace of mind.

Family is the right word. I thank God for leading me there and all the blessings that came out of it.

All I can say is "Thanks Be to God!"

Edit: I totally forgot to mention that my nephew Robert is back home safe after his tour of duty. **smacks head**

We made $ 1,260.80 at the book sale itself. We will get some money from the used book store later for books they accept and possibly some post-event donations.

We are also selling note cards featuring the photography of our Holy Cross Sharp Shooters through Sept. 11. All our proceeds will help needy children in Haiti through Partners in Health.

For the past ten or so years, I've tried to see my favorite band Third Day and something always came up. One of my friends had tickets and couldn't go, so we got them from her and went last night. Oh, it was so awesome! Also, there was a bonus of two other artists, Trevor Morgan and Tenth Avenue North. I was a really happy Pixie. We found out one of Third Day's songs will be featured in the film Seven Days in Utopia. I remember when they were featured in the film Joshua.
We took some pictures and video clips....just clips with the camera and ipod...nothing long or really great, but it's like scrapbooking the event, if you know what I mean.

We will be making home made cards, enjoying snacks and beverages and learning more about our charity for the year. You can pay $5 for supplies or bring your own. We also ask for a donation for our sponsored program, the Haiti Micah project..

The Haiti Micah Project is a nonprofit Christian organization committed to addressing the needs of impoverished and uneducated children in Haiti. The mission is to assist the street children of Mirebalais in meeting their most basic needs, by providing food, clean water, health care, education, vocational training and emotional well being. Our goal is to reach out to needy children and provide them with the proper care, guidance, education and skills that they need so that they will play an important role in improving their conditions and the conditions of this poverty-stricken country.

Women to Women is an outreach ministry that has it all-fun, fellowship, feasting, learning and fund raising. Donations fund international charities that benefit and empower women and children in poverty. Meetings are informal and hosted by volunteers.

The Women to Women cookout hosted by Montie Drinan at the Holy Cross Pavilion on June 19, 2009 was a great success . This cookout was open to the men and all ladies. Our guest speaker was Ennis Whiddon. Ennis spoke to us about his work with the Portal charity, which provides assistance to the women and children of the "Moskitia coast in Honduras". Fifty-five people attended this event and $646 was raised for the Portal charity.

Today, the United States installs a new president. Whether or not you voted for him, I am sure you want him to do a good job for our country. Please take a moment to say a prayer for the new president and those in authority. Here is a good one from the Book of Common Prayer, page 820.

Blue Service

Yesterday evening, the church I attend held a "Blue Christmas" service. This was for people who were not necessarily holly-jolly this Christmas but facing some painful issues. I had volunteered to help the DOK serve refreshments afterward, but I really needed to go for myself. I had lost my mother and an aunt since last Christmas. Granted, they both lived to a good age and I am so glad my Mom is out of her suffering. Still, it is a loss and acknowledging the loss does help. During the service, various candles were lit for painful issues such as dealing with grief, illness, job loss etc. Then the congregation was invited to come forth and light a candle for their own personal loss. I lit a candle for Mom and Aunt Willa Mae. It helped to reflect on other things and to recognize that personal pain does not stop for the holidays. This was a wonderful, healing experience and I am so glad I went.

Brighten up a vet's holiday!

I am specifically talking about my nephew stationed in Iraq. He would love to receive cards & letters. This note was from his Mom:

Hi,
For those of you who may have an extra card as you address your Christmas cards this season, please send one to Robert. He called this morning and mentioned that he rarely gets any mail. It takes a while to reach him but I know he would appreciate knowing that he is thought of this Christmas season.

He is stationed somewhere is Iraq. He can't tell us where for security reasons or what he is doing. He did mention that it was cold at night, that the rain was brown and it is a 1 hr drive to a store (base store I assume). He was just getting off a 16 hr shift. At least working intelligence he is not out patrolling and in the direct line of fire. I am sure it will be a very different and difficult Christmas for him.

I have two requests of prayer:

We found out last night that my father-in-law, Tom Holford has prostate cancer. The prognosis is good, but he will be undergoing radiation treatments that will drain him. He also has diabetes and other issues. Please pray that the treatments will go well and he will keep all other health issues under control. Thanks so much!

My husband's cousin Martha had cancer some 5-6 years ago and they told her she wouldn't live until Christmas, but they didn't seem to know which Christmas. She's struggled with health issues and now she's in the hospital. Her neighbors found her passed out in her home. Please pray for her too!

I covet your prayers for my nephew Robert

Here is an update from my brother. Please continue to pray for my nephew Robert Harrison. He is the second nephew of mine that has been sent to Iraq. The first came home safely. He is now out of the military, but is a member of the police force. Any of you can feel free to add Robert to any prayer list you know of. His family is very grateful for the prayers.

We got a letter from his CO a couple days ago-- kinda telling us what is going on and not to expect to hear much from him. The Lt. said he was "forward deployed in Iraq" which can mean almost anything actually. It was really a nice letter and we very glad to receive it, though we still know very little. If we hear anything else, we'll let you know.

The Peace that Passes Understanding

It's getting closer to Mother's Day and I've been missing Mom. We plan on visiting her grave Mother's Day weekend and taking flowers. I dreamed about her last night. I consider those dreams a gift. I really need to get motivated to start the art project I had in mind. I am sure I will gain comfort in that. I also draw comfort from the below Bibical text and the two featured songs.

My Mom passed from this life one month ago today. I remember how much she loved Johnny Cash's cover of Nine Inch Nail's "Hurt" but she would get especially melancholy about the part "Everyone I know goes away in the end." She had seen her parents pass from this life, all her siblings, one child and numerous friends, relatives and co-workers." Now, she is the one that that went away. I miss her so much.

I want to add that, IMO, just knowing these things does not make you a scholar. For one thing, some of the choices given were so ridiculous, you just had to point to the correct answer. For another, I had a minister who said, "We shouldn't just be Bible Readers, but be Bible Students." What's the difference? The Bible reader just reads the Bible and that's it. He might know what person was swallowed by a great fish, but he might not understand the culture of Nineveh, the place were said person was supposed to go deliver a message from God. A Bible Student, on the other hand, studies not only the Bible but also studies the culture it came from, any historical data, archaeological data and so forth to better understand how the culture worked it came from and that we can't just read the Bible from a Western perspective. We can't read it like a textbook or newspaper. It is a theological statement of the people of that time.

I love the study of theology and the deeper meanings that are often embedded in these tales. Even if you have no knowledge of the Bible, you will get tickled at some of the answer choices which you know for sure were impossible 2000 years ago.
